What happened
Two people were seriously injured Saturday, July 26, 2026, when a pickup crossed into oncoming traffic and struck another vehicle head-on on Highway 18 in Floyd County, Iowa. (KCRG)
According to KCRG, a westbound Chevrolet Silverado crossed the center line into the eastbound lanes and collided head-on with a Nissan Rogue. Both drivers suffered serious injuries and were transported to a local hospital. The Iowa State Patrol is investigating; as of this report, no names, ages, or cause of the crash had been released.

Head-on collisions like this one are almost always the result of a vehicle leaving its own lane and crossing into oncoming traffic — what safety engineers call a "roadway departure" crash. Nationally, the Federal Highway Administration has found that roadway departures account for roughly half of all U.S. traffic fatalities, and that head-on collisions caused by a vehicle crossing the centerline are the most harmful outcome in about 27% of those roadway-departure deaths, with the large majority happening on undivided, rural highways — conditions that describe much of Highway 18 (FHWA, Roadway Departure Crashes). Drivers on two-lane rural highways should stay alert for fatigue, avoid distraction, and slow down in poor visibility, since even a brief drift over the centerline at highway speed can be catastrophic.
The rights of families after a crash like this
In head-on crashes like this one, the driver who stayed in their own lane and the people hurt because of it often have a claim against the other driver's auto insurance, particularly when a vehicle crossing the centerline caused the collision. Iowa law requires every driver to keep their vehicle within the proper lane of travel, and a breach of that duty — if it caused this crash — can support a negligence claim by the driver and any passengers who were hurt.
Nothing has been reported yet about why the Silverado crossed into the eastbound lanes — whether from distraction, fatigue, a medical event, or another cause — and the Iowa State Patrol's investigation remains open. If the investigation shows the Silverado's driver was negligent in crossing the centerline, the driver and any occupants of the Nissan Rogue may have a claim against that driver and their insurer for medical expenses, lost income, and pain and suffering.
