Two people were killed Thursday morning when a three-vehicle crash on Highway 10 near Hickory Avenue in Sioux County, Iowa — about two miles east of the Highway 10/Highway 75 junction near Maurice, and west of Orange City — burst into flames. According to KCRG, first responders were called to the scene around 6 a.m. A Dodge Charger and a tow truck were both traveling westbound on Highway 10 when a Chevrolet Impala was traveling eastbound. The Charger's driver attempted to pass another vehicle and collided head-on with the Impala in the eastbound lanes; the rear of the Charger then struck the driver's door of the tow truck, and a vehicle caught fire. Lazaro Misael Martin, 19, of Orange City, and Jeffrey Lee Lahr, 53, of Westfield, were identified as the two people who died. (KCRG)
KIWA Radio reports that a dense fog advisory was in effect in the area at the time, though it is not yet known whether fog was a factor in the crash. The Sioux County Sheriff's Office says the Iowa State Patrol is investigating; the crash closed Highway 10 for over five hours. Rural highways like Highway 10 are disproportionately dangerous: NHTSA's most recent data shows the traffic fatality rate on rural roads is roughly 1.5 times higher than on urban roads, measured per mile driven (NHTSA). Head-on and opposite-direction crashes like this one are a major reason why — the Federal Highway Administration has found that these crash types occur about as often inside marked passing zones as outside them, meaning a passing maneuver that looks safe in the moment can still end in a head-on collision, especially in fog, at dawn, or on unfamiliar roads (FHWA).
