A pickup truck and a semi-truck trailer caught fire Thursday afternoon after colliding on eastbound Interstate 80 near Maxwell, Nebraska, just west of Maranatha Bible Camp. According to WOWT and KSNB, Maxwell Fire and Rescue was called to the crash at mile marker 186 at 3:43 p.m., and crews arriving on scene found both the pickup and the semi's trailer on fire. Firefighters extinguished the flames and remained on scene for mop-up operations. One person was transported by the North Platte Fire Department; that person's injuries were unknown as of this writing. Eastbound I-80 was reduced to one lane while crews worked the scene. The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash; no citations or fault determination have been reported. (WOWT; KSNB)

A routine drive down I-80 turning into a vehicle fire is a frightening thing for anyone involved, and our thoughts are with the person who was transported for treatment as they, hopefully, recover. We're grateful for the fast work of Maxwell Fire and Rescue and North Platte Fire Department in putting out the flames and getting that person help, and for the Nebraska State Patrol troopers now working to sort out what happened.

Crashes between passenger vehicles and large trucks remain one of the deadliest categories of crash on interstates like I-80. Nationally, 5,936 people died in crashes involving large trucks in 2022, up from 5,821 the year before — and 97% of the people killed in those crashes were occupants of the other vehicle, not the truck (NHTSA). A pickup or car is simply no match for the size and weight of a loaded semi, which is exactly why following distance, speed for conditions, and a trucker's blind spots matter so much on a highway like I-80. Anyone traveling that corridor should give commercial trucks extra room and extra caution, especially around merges and lane changes.
The rights of families after a crash like this
In crashes between a passenger vehicle and a semi-truck, the driver of the smaller vehicle — or their family, if the injuries are serious — generally has the right to look into a claim against the truck driver and, depending on the facts, the trucking company and other responsible parties as well. Because the Nebraska State Patrol's investigation is still open and neither outlet has reported who was driving which vehicle or what caused the collision, it isn't yet possible to say more than that: if the reporting is later confirmed to show one driver crossed into the other's path, merged unsafely, or failed to maintain a safe following distance, the injured party may have a claim against that driver and, if it was the truck, potentially against the trucking company that owns and operates it. Nothing about fault has been officially determined, and no citations have been announced as of this writing.
