Illinois Man Dies After Single-Vehicle Crash Under Dubuque County Highway 20 Overpass

What happened

A man from Illinois has died after a single-vehicle crash under the Highway 20 overpass bridges in Dubuque County early Friday morning. According to KCRG and WGLR, citing the Dubuque County Sheriff's Office, the crash happened around 4:30 a.m. Friday, August 15, on 1st Street South, underneath the Highway 20 overpass. Two people were injured and taken to MercyOne Dubuque. One of them, Gabriel Rodriguez Pina, 41, of Bloomingdale, Illinois, was later transferred to University of Iowa Health Care in Iowa City, where he died from his injuries; his death was announced Tuesday, August 18. The second occupant, Gaurav Karwal, 41, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, sustained serious injuries. The cause of the crash has not been released, and the Sheriff's Office says it continues to investigate. Our condolences

Gabriel Rodriguez Pina was far from home in Bloomingdale, Illinois, when this crash took his life. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and to Gaurav Karwal as he recovers from serious injuries of his own. Losing someone to a crash with no clear explanation yet is its own particular kind of hard, and we hope answers come soon for everyone who loved him.

Safety context

Single-vehicle crashes make up a larger share of fatal crashes than many people realize. In 2023, single-vehicle crashes accounted for roughly 21,902 of the 40,990 total traffic deaths nationwide — more than half of all traffic fatalities — according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Summary of Motor Vehicle Traffic Crashes report (NHTSA). Factors like road design, lighting, weather, driver fatigue, and mechanical failure can all play a role in a single-vehicle crash, which is why a full investigation matters before anyone assumes they know what happened.

The rights of families after a crash like this

In crashes like this one, where the cause hasn't yet been made public, it isn't possible to say what led to the crash or whether anyone besides the driver may bear responsibility — a single-vehicle crash can result from a driver's own error, but it can also result from a road hazard, a mechanical defect, another vehicle that left the scene, or another party's negligence. Families of someone killed in an unexplained crash like this often benefit from having their own investigation done — reviewing the roadway and bridge structure at the crash site, any available vehicle data, and physical evidence — before conclusions are drawn from a preliminary sheriff's office statement. Nothing in this article should be read as a determination of fault or cause; the investigation here is still open.

This discussion is based purely on details reported publicly in the news. It is not determinative of fault and is not conclusive — it lacks the full and complete information necessary to make such an informed determination.

How I help families in crisis

Losing someone in a crash with no clear cause yet announced is one of the hardest positions a family can be in — grief, without answers. My job is to take that stress off a family's shoulders, take up the shield to protect and advocate for the rights of the people I represent, and guide them through one of the hardest chapters of their lives, while they focus on grieving and healing together.

When the facts are unclear, I move quickly to preserve evidence before it's lost — the physical scene, any available vehicle data, roadway and structural conditions, and witness accounts — and I bring in accident reconstruction experts when the facts call for it to help establish what actually happened. I deal directly with insurance companies so my clients don't have to fight that battle themselves.

I've recovered more than $23 million for injured people and their families, and I'm proud of the trust reflected in countless five-star client reviews and peer endorsements, including Best of Omaha for personal injury in both 2025 and 2026.

If you or someone you love was affected by this crash or one like it, I offer a free, no-pressure conversation, and if I take your case, there's no fee unless I win.
